In 1915, it was set up firstly as the Maymyo Botanical Gardens by Alex Roger, a Forest Officer. The original site was 30 acres, as the model of the Gardens of  England with the help of an amateur gardener called Lady Cuffe. In 1917, the government recognized it officially; in 1942 the Ministry of Forestry chose the Botanical Gardens a "protected forest area". Until 2000, Sr Gen Than Shwe renamed it "Kandawgyi National Gardens" that the Ministry of Forestrymanages. So far, it has been used to promote extensive ecotourism in Myanmar.

The Botanical Gardens contains more than 700 species of rare domestic and foreign trees and 300 specious orchid species, etc. The gardens are popular with tourists, enjoying the rolling lawns and Alpine landscape, similar in England. The gardens also keeps endangered wild animals, including Eld's Deer, Burmese Star Tortoise, Takin, Hog Deer, pheasants and waterfowls. Besides, it has the cooperation with the UK based Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) to conserve the indigenous orchids in their natural condition.

In addition, the Botanical Garden has three museums. The Fossils Museum houses fossils of mammals, reptiles, and invertebrates, and the Petrified Wood Museum displays fossils of plants, colorful stones, toddy-palm roots, as well as things made from fossils of plants. The Butterfly Museum has various species of butterflies from Nepal, Taiwan, South America, Japan and South East Asia. The gardens lie among lakes and paths and there are beautiful collection of pond fish and lovely black and white swans. It is such a wonderful experience for visitors to walk on the aerial walkway as well as the swamp trail through aviary with hornbills and a variety of other birds. Visitors can climb up a watch tower to get a great view over Pyin Oo Lwin and the Shan Hills, which is a popular picnic spot and one of the main attractions here.

Over all, the garden has so many other interesting attractions: Orchid Garden, Children Playground, Pagoda Island, Tea House, Souvenir Center, Rainbow Fountain, Swamp Walkway, Rock Garden, Bamboo Garden, Croton Garden, Pine Forest, Timber Walkways, Rain Forest, Walk in Aviary and Takin Compound.
