Beside Shwe Myetman Buddha Image, Shwe Nat Taung Pagoda, which was once called Shwetaung (golden hill), is the second place to be well known on the hill in Shwe Taung. It lies on the Yangon-Pyay motor road. Shwe Nat Taung Pagoda means ‘Golden Spirit Mountain’. The local legend tells that this pagoda was built by Myanmar King with the aid of Nats (spirits). It is said to enshrine the Buddha hair relics.
Shwe Nat Taung Pagoda was built in Srikshetra era. Among many images of Buddha is a serene one carved from marble. A large paya pwe (pagoda festival) is held every year on the full moon of Tabaung (February/March).
From Shwenattaung Pagoda in the suburbs, you can see the Kinmungyon Reservoir, which is supplying water to the city. It was constructed as long ago as 1903 when the population was very much smaller than it is now.
