Shwemokhtaw is one of famous pagoda in Pathein, Myanmar. In the pagoda, Thiho-shin Phondawpyi Buddha statue is worshiped at the southern pavilion. Regarding its origin, King Asoka of India built the pagoda in 305 BC. Then Bagan's King Alaungsithu set up the 11 meter stupa in 1115 AD, and in 1263 AD the Mon King Samodogossa raised it to 40 m. Until now, the stupa is 47 m high. Its three layers are in turn made of solid gold, pure silver and bronze with thousand of diamonds, rubies and precious stones. Besides, visitors can attend the pagoda festival taking place in April or May.
