Situated near Wetkyi-In Village, Gubyaukgyi Temple was built after the Mahabodhi Temple of India, expressing strong Indian influence. The spire of the construction is not in conical design like other temples in Bagan but in straight and tapered shape.
In Burmese language, ‘Gu’ means cave, suggesting this is a cave temple, with intricate frescoes depicting scenes from the Jakata inside.
The temple is also called Wetkyi-in Gubyaukgyi in order to differentiate with the other Gubyaukgyi Temple in Myinkaba Village, which is also known as Myinkaba Gubyaukgyi.
